Gerald Schloff spoke to Rotary about the plans to build eight tennis courts at 325 Park Ave., site of the former Thomas Jefferson School.

These courts will be open to the public but will also be used by the Central High School tennis team for practices. The courts are only a few blocks from the school.

The efforts is being undertaken by the Bay Community Tennis Association (BCTA), which was formed in response to the deteriorating condition of a number of tennis courts throughout Bay City. The objective is to provide a quality tennis facility and to increase local tennis opportunities for all ages.

As a member of the U.S. Tennis Assn., BCTA strives to provide a resource and training facility that makes sure tennis in Bay City remains a low cost, healthy, and safe opportunity for everyone.

The former Jefferson school was selected because of the location and because the building was not suitable for other uses. Demolishing the school freed up a perfect location for the tennis courts, parking, and public space. The plan is to build eight adjacent tennis courts, including wheelchair accessible courts. The courts will also include lines for players under the age of 10.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

President Andrea reported on some of the actions taken at the board meeting today.

Lee Newton reminded members of the World Polio Day live stream event at the Monday evening, October 24, at the State Theatre. Lee also added some weekly "Polio 101" facts. Remember, our club is in a good natured competition with the morning club to see which club can raise the most money per member by October 24. Our club goal is $1,000, which we are well on the way to.

Lee also presented a jug with 30 pounds of coins. That's $600 in quarters, $600 in dimes, $270 in pennies, and $54.50 in pennies. A worthy contribution toward the club's polio efforts!

President Andrea gave another thanks to Chris Girard and Tara Welch for all their work on the recent Zombie Run fun raiser.

Connie Schweitzer announced that the club will be giving a Paul Harris award to Avram Golden at the upcoming District Gala.

Harvey Schneider reported on the $4,750 in Community Grants that the board approved.

Vocational Day is November 1. 160 students have signed up so far. If you can help be sure to contact Matt or Trevor Keyes right away.

Tim Holsworth reported that the success of the Golf Outing at raising funds for the Bay City Schools technology efforts will be expanded next year to encompass all four districts in the county.

The club is still collecting gently used children's books to be shipped to the Philippines where schools and their libraries were devastated by a hurricane. If you don't have books, dollars will be accepted and used to purchase books.

The Dictionary and Thesaurus order is in, labeled and ready for delivery. A signup sheet will be available at meetings or you can contact Ed Clements or Andrea if you've already signed up or if you need to sign up.
