Avram Golden
Local Photographer, Small Business Owner, and Optimistic Change Maker
Avram Golden talked about his take on photography and showed pictures from Bay City and around the world last Tuesday.
Golden was recently honored by the Bay City Club as a "Paul Harris Fellow". The award was presented as the Rotary Foundation Gala held in Frankenmuth. Each club selected an outstanding non-Rotarian from their community to receive the award in recognition to their service.
Golden is not only an exceptional photographer, he is also an enthusiastic supporter of Bay City. Best known recently for his promotion of the 3rd Street "Light Bridge", he is also the man behind the First Thursday Gallery Walk, the Flags that adorn the downtown from Memorial Day until Labor Day each year.
Taking some time to describe the downtown Flag Project, Avram talked about being inspired by his brother, a decorated soldier who was lost overseas. The flag project provided some experience with getting city approval, but in the end proved to be a popular project. Starting with 80 flags, the group now has 160 flags and has the approval to expand the project to Columbus Avenue.
The 3rd Street Light Bridge quickly became a City landmark and destination. It is a favorite place for photographers taking night shots that show up frequently on the internet as well as in personal collections and wedding books.
Avram's love of Bay City was easy to see in his photographs of the City as well as the world. It gave Rotarians a new way to view their community.
CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS
President Andrea reminded Rotarians of the upcoming Golf Outing. This major club fundraiser is scheduled for June 19, a date that will arrive sooner than anyone expects.
The
District Conference is coming up soon. In the past clubs have donated items to club gift baskets to be raffled off. This year the District will be raffling off pictures painted by Artist George Lewis. Each club is asked to sell 10 tickets between now and May 1st. To date, our club has sold 4.
The club has collected four boxes of books to be shipped to the Philippines. Those should be shipped out in a few weeks.
The club honored February Birthdays last week. Members are reminded that those celebrating another year are encouraged to make a contribution to the Rotary Foundation in honor of their years.
