The Bay Concert Band begins its 41st season on Wednesday, November 1st, 2017 with "A Musical Variety Show". The concert will be staged at the Bay City Central High School Auditorium. Doors open at 7:00 pm and the admission price is $5 (children 6th grade and under are free).

The band, performing under the baton of Peter Makar Jr. will present a truly mixed bag of music from several composers and in several styles.

Beginning with Franz von Suppe's overture to the famous operetta "Light Calvary", the band then moves to Clare Grundman's "Second American Folk Rhapsody" which features several well-known folk songs.

The first half also features a work with an almost, but not quite a recognizable name. Published in 1914 as part of the United States Band Journal (No. 204) the number is entitled "Way down upon de Swanee Ribber, Old Folks At Home and In Foreign Lands". According to the program notes the piece is "an International Transcription of the American Folk Song in the idiom of Eight Nations".

The first half wraps up with two well-known variety pieces, the first being Scott Joplin?s "The Entertainer, A Ragtime Two-Step" and the second Henry Fillmore's famous "Lassus Trombone".

The second half features one of the best works for concert band ever written. The composition was originally entitled "Electric Park" after an amusement park in Kansas City where composer Robert Russell Bennett grew up. The name was changed to "The Suite of Old American Dances" before it was published in 1950 in two versions, one for Symphony Orchestra and the other for Concert Band.

Bennett's "Suite" is a five-movement work based popular dances of the early 1950?s including Cake Walk, Schottische, Western One-Step, Wallflower Waltz and a Rag. The suite is a dynamic piece for concert band full of excitement and a little melancholy. The piece demonstrates a masterful use of the resources available within the modern concert band.

The season's opening program truly offers something for everyone in a program that can be enjoyed by all. Doors open at 7 pm with the concert starting at 7:30. Tickets are $5 at the door and children six grade and under are free.
