On Saturday, January 18, 2003 the Bay Music Foundation continued a 50 year tradition by holding its annual scholarship competition. This year forty two young musicians competed for music scholarship money.
On Sunday the 19th, the foundation hosted the annual "Thank You Recital" where seventeen winners from last year's competition returned to perform and report on how they used their scholarship money.
Winners of this year's competition were announced at the conclusion of the recital.
The competition is divided into three broad divisions: Intermediate (grades 7 and 8), Senior (grades 9-12), and Advanced (for previous first place winners). Within each division there are four categories of competition: Instrumental, Piano, Vocal, and Music Theater. A first and second place scholarship is given in each division and category. Judges may also award honorable mentions.

The purpose of the Bay Music Foundation is to promote and advanced music education and to recognize the many talented young musicians in our community.
Each January between 30 and 50 young musicians and performers compete for scholarships awarded by the foundation. Recent winners have applied their scholarship awards to summer study and music camps such as Blue Lake Fine Arts Camp, Interlochen Arts Academy, Herter Music Camp, the University of Michigan, and Central Michigan University. Others have used the awards for advanced private lessons.
