Lightning has struck and Bay City's Trenton Robinson is on the Super Bowl team of the San Francisco 49ers.

Students were whooping it up this week in the halls at Central High where Robinson starred in the defensive backfield 2004-2008. Central Coach/Athletic Director Morley Fraser and former classmates were interviewed by WJRT-TV channel 12 as part of the euphoria.

Sunday's match-up also has fellow Spartan rookie Garrett Celek, 6-5 252 pound tight end out of LaSalle High in Cincinnati. He is the younger brother of Philadelphia Eagles tight end Brent Celek.

Also on the 53-man roster is veteran center Jonathan Goodwin, 6-3 318 pounder out of the University of Michigan. Goodwin is a starter who joined the 49ers from New Orleans and also played for the New York Jets. He prepped at Lower Richland High in Hopkins, South Carolina. Goodwin was the Saints' starting center during their 2009 Super Bowl season and made the Pro Bowl as a reserve in 2010.

The Central Michigan Chippewa on the team is Joe Staley, 6-5 315 pound tackle with six years experience. Staley starred as a sprinter in track as well as football at Rockford (Michigan) High.

Five players, including Mario Manningham, 6-0 185 pound star wide receiver from Warren, Ohio, out of the University of Michigan, are on the injured reserve list and seven others are listed on the practice squad. Darius Fleming, linebacker from Notre Dame, is listed as physically unable to perform.

Robinson, a safety playing behind two pro-bowlers, has gotten in three games on the kickoff squad but made the team with stellar play in the pre-season. Lee Thompson of The Bay City Times wrote:

"With his San Francisco 49ers roster spot in doubt the night before final cuts, the former Bay City Central and Michigan State University standout delivered the biggest play of his young NFL career.

"Robinson recovered a fumble and returned it 22 yards, setting up a 49ers touchdown in the first quarter of their 35-3 victory over the San Diego Chargers. It was the kind of play Jim Harbaugh and the 49ers staff were looking for, as they rewarded their sixth-round draft pick with a spot on the 53-man roster Friday."

Bay City Central coach Morley Fraser said. "To see him out there in the San Francisco jersey, it gives you goosebumps."

In the final preseason game against the San Diego Chargers, tight end Antonio Gates was tackled after catching a pass on third down.

"The ball bounced loose and Robinson was on the scene, picking up the bouncing ball and returning it 22 yards to the Chargers 32-yard line. That set up a Niners score as Colin Kaepernick connected with Delanie Walker two plays later for a 14-0 lead," wrote Thompson.

"When I saw the ball it surprised me, so I picked it up and tried to get to the house. That didn't work out, but it was still a great play."

Robinson also had a big hit on a running back and added a pass breakup later in the game.

All-state defensive back at Bay City Central, Robinson was a team captain at Michigan State. He was part of the winningest senior class in MSU history, being named all-Big Ten his last two years.
