This was a game that Garber was "looking at since the coach's clinic" according to Coach Jake Coquillard. We told the kids "it was theirs. Go take it." And take it they did.

After a thorough trouncing of Pinconning in the opening week, the question around the area was whether Garber was that good. And what better bench mark to make that statement than against perennial Tri-Valley East power and one of the Duke's top rival, Millington. Even more so, the game served as a key factor in the rebuilding program Head Coach Jake Coquillard started four years ago when he took over a very successful program and inserted a new offensive philosophy.

Last season, this offense help lead the Dukes back to the playoffs with a 6-4 record. This season, with talented sophomore Login Martin at the controls, the Dukes are eying much more that a winning record and a playoff berth. They are looking to return to the league championship and re-establish themselves as a power in the league once again.

But the constant cornerstone of Garber football has continued to be a strong, hard hitting defense again led by senior Alex Neering who dominates the game with his defensive skills and rush. Alex Neering "is one of the best in the state" explained a very happy and proud Coquillard of his player and team. "It is amazing how much impact he has on the game." And impact he did with a batted pass and several key sacks late in the game including the back breaker on fourth and 22 when Millington was looking to make a comeback. Neering blew threw his blocker and nailed QB Caleb Wascher before he could set up to throw. This sack led to the clinching touchdown late in the fourth quarter.

The game started a little shaky for Garber as Millington received the opening kickoff and proceeded to march down field as they ran between the tackles. The drive was stopped when CJ Glaza pounced on a fumble on the Duke 23 yard line.

Penalties kept Garber from getting anything started on offense and another penalty on the fair catch gave Millington the ball back at the Duke 30. With momentum seeming to start on the Cardinal sideline, up stepped the Duke defense led by Alex Neering, Montena Owczarzak and company. The fierce attack shut down Millington before they could get going.

QB Logan Martin and Noah Bargouthy got the offense on track. After Bargouthy got some "you can't bring me down" yards on the first two plays, Martin kept the ball off tackle, broke free and raced 52 yards to the Cardinal 11. Martin then followed the fake to Bargouthy up the middle driving the final 9 yards for a Duke touchdown. After a low kick, Garber held a 6-0 lead in the first quarter.

Neering set the tone for Millington's next possession as he sacked the quarterback for a five yard loss to start the series. Millington tried to find yardage through the air but was forced to punt giving Garber the ball at midfield to start the second quarter.

Using some misdirection running, Garber reached the thirty five yard line. A penalty looked like it might stall the drive when Martin hit Simeon Berry on an out pattern down the right sideline for a Duke first down. Moments later, Martin ran the ball to the three yard line where Bargouthy went left bouncing it outside for a Duke touchdown. The two point conversion attempt was stopped and Garber held a 12-0 lead.

Millington went back to pounding between the tackles and moved the ball past midfield before Noah Bargouthy made a fourth and one stop and Garber was back in business.

Garber again moved the ball on Martin's read and run leadership with Bargouthy as the two powered the team down the field. Then Martin found CJ Glaza down the right side line. Glaza was tightly guarded but the three year starter junior reached back over the defender to make a great catch putting Garber on the 10 yard line. From there, Martin moved right handing the ball to Berry going left on a counter and the speedy senior slipped nine yards into the end zone for an 18-0 half time lead.

Penalties fill the start of the second half as both teams tried to take over the game. Garber stalled their own drive with several flags against them before the Cardinal defense shut down Garber at the Millington 32. The Cardinal offense went to the grind it out attack that had proven productive and started moving the ball. They then reached into their bag of tricks to produce their first score and change the momentum of the game. The Cardinal QB Wascher threw a lateral pass to his flanker, Austin Weber on what looked like a flanker screen. But Weber threw a 43 yard cross the field bomb to an all alone Jordan Hudson for Millington's first touchdown of the night. A two point conversion attempt failed and Millington was back in the game at 18-6 late in the third quarter.

After forcing a three and out, Millington had the ball at their 30 yard line. Wascher wasted little time as he hit Weber cross the middle of the field on a 40 yard strike. As the quarter ended changing field direction, the Duke defense changed the momentum direction as well. Driving Millington back, they sniffed out a fourth down screen pass to stall the drive at the Duke 31.

It was now Bargouthy time as the Duke offense handed the ball to the senior powerhouse back. He churned his way down field eventually scoring from the three to seal the victory at 25-6.

Clearly this was an important victory for Garber, the seniors and the program as the team has a lot of respect for the Cardinal program. Login Martin led the attack with 162 yards on 19 carries. "I can't say enough about him," noted an excited Jake Coquillard. Reflecting on the number of hits his quarterback took tonight, "He grew up a lot tonight. He is the catalyst of our offense. We are lucky to have him." And Martin has a solid cast of players to support is efforts as workhorse Bargouthy carried 14 times for 58 yard yards while Simeon Berry and Sean Reilly added outside speed.

"I'm so darn proud of the kids," noted Coach Coquillard. But especially proud he was of the defense. While the effort was lead by Alex Neering, Montena Owczarzak and Levi Britton, it was the swarming defensive effort that kept the Cardinals from getting those extra effort yards so important to keeping drives going.

Friday, Garber travels to Frankenmuth for an equally as important match with last year's TVC champ.
