The male was equipped with a Smith and Wesson .45 caliber while his date was accessorized with a Bushmaster assault rifle and cartridge belt.

Seven school groups were scheduled to come tour the capitol Wednesday, but when notified that it was 'Open Carry Day', three of those groups stayed home, reported Fox Detroit last week.

Outside the capitol Tim Skubick, Lansing columnist and television personality, interviewed citizens about the day, the second such event this year.

In his weekly TV show, Off The Record, he commented that apparently "open carry" days are now to be held every quarter at the capitol.

There was not open outrage and no one seemed to realize this fact: guns are still banned in schools in Michigan; if the capitol becomes, virtually, a school with hundreds of children walking the marble halls, why are guns allowed?

Since the school principals were notified before their students' "field trips" began, why did four schools still send students?

"For the record, it is legal to openly bear arms at the Michigan Capitol Building," commented ammoland.com.

Skubick reported some apprehension about the stunt: "Well, you have somebody walk in with a shotgun and full-battle fatigues and an ammo belt, you'd be nervous, too," State Representative Harold Haugh, Roseville Democrat, exclaimed.

A pistol-packing second amendment supporter was accompanied by a female Rambo outfitted, it seemed, for jungle warfare, in the January event.

A tourist group from Livonia, not expecting to see so many guns, shared their opinions with Skubick on Wednesday saying they were also nervous about having so many weapons inside the building.

Bonnie Bucqueroux, who teaches at Michigan State University's School of Journalism, took her video camera to the Jan. 20 "open carry day" held the month after the horrific Newtown, Connecticut, shooting when Adam Lanza killed 26 people including 20 children at Sandy Hook Elementary School.

"They say that an armed society is a polite society, but not in my case apparently," commented Ms. Bucqueroux about the hostility she encountered when trying to exercise her First Amendment rights on Second Amendment advocates. She commented in her blog:

"At the Capitol, many of the mostly white male supporters expressed their fears that the government is 'coming for their guns.' Some showed their support for the militias referenced in the Second Amendment. A number of them vowed to defy any federal order to confiscate their guns (though none is planned), and all vowed to fight for their right to own any firearm of their choice.

Jim Kiertzner of WXYZ-TV Detroit reported: "Dozens of men and women marched on the state capitol in Lansing to push for passage of a bill that would allow them to legally carry their guns in locations that are now banned. Those include schools, churches, sports arenas, hospitals, day care centers and movie theaters.

Michigan Senate Bill 213 would also make changes in the county boards that approve CCW permits.

"Some of the people in Lansing today were caring long guns and assault rifles that got the attention of people and drew extra security.

"The group is called Michigan Open Carry and individual members visited State Representatives and Senators from their home districts with their guns strapped on."
