Nostalgia sells, and Grayling has just proven that again.

Folks with fond memories of attending the Rialto Theater in Grayling, Michigan, have come through.

A campaign to raise $100,000 launched two months ago on the crowdfunding site Kickstarter has gone over the top at $107,695 from 699 backers. The funding campaign closed on Feb. 28.

The Rialto was among 34,728 film projects seeking funding on kickstarter.com.

The Rialto last Saturday night hosted the premier of "The River," a flyfishing documentary about the fabled AuSable River that filled the house. An estimated 300 persons attended.

A reviewer waxed enthusiastic: "Throughout the filming of the fishing season, (Director Robert) Thompson seamless cuts away from the fishing to, tell the history of this amazing river, chat with folks who make their living on the water and gives a heart warming tribute to Anglers founder Rusty Gates.

Acclaimed filmmaker and Au Sable trout bum Robert "RT" Thompson spent the past two seasons chronicling the lifestyles, traditions, bugs, trout and fishing on the Au Sable. His new three-movie DVD is called "The River." It includes a full-length movie about the entire Au Sable, a separate profile of bamboo rod builder Bob Summers, and a third profile of a tribe of trophy-hunting streamer freaks in Mio.

A portion of all movie sales will be donated to Anglers of the Au Sable for ongoing river conservation work. The DVD is $33, or $39 for BluRay, shipping included.

The theater project was the brainchild of Jordan Stancil, "who was born and raised in Grayling, and first worked at the Rialto Theater in 1988 as the kid behind the concession stand," he wrote in the Kickstarter promotion.

"After college, he joined the U.S. State Department and served in the Middle East and Europe. Returning home to take over the family business, Jordan wants to build the Rialto Theater into a state-of-the-art venue for entertainment and culture that will benefit future generations in the Grayling area."

Eleven backers pledged $500 or more and received:

This will come with a commemorative card, and you will also receive five movie tickets with popcorn and drinks, a Rialto T-shirt, a Rialto sticker, and recognition on the video Wall of Fame.
