Rotary Hears About Tri-City Sports Complex

Club Holds Homecoming and Presents ROSE Award

Manoj Shah , co-owner of the Tri-City Sports Complex, talked to Rotary about the new facility opening in Auburn. With the slogan of "It's a great day to PLAY INSIDE", the complex will offer the areas first full service sports complex north of the Detroit metro area.

Shah described the domed facility and some of the engineering features such as heating and air conditioning. "The temperature will be 60-65 degrees in the winter and 70-75 in the summer. There will be a slightly higher air pressure, but hardly enough to matter.

The dome is an inflated "bubble" that is supported by a series of seven underground fans. Three do the main work, two others are for air conditioning and the other two are in reserve.

The playing surface is an artificial turf engineered for the best performance. It has a resilient feel that helps protect players. A regular cleaning schedule will insure the peak performance of the surface.

Presently there are just a few facilities in the area and these are not at all geared to the needs of all sports. The Kokomo dome in Saginaw targets a different market and includes golf practice. There is really nothing providing the services of the Tri-City Complex north of the area and the closest to the south is 70 miles away.

The Tri-City Complex is targeting all sports at all levels. Both kids and adults will be accommodated. The complex can be divided into sections with movable partitions to allow portions to be rented for events as well as for practice.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

The Bay City Rotary celebrated its annual Rotary Homecoming last Tuesday. A number of former members as well as guest and potential members were present. Members were encouraged to wear their school colors. Event organizer Rob Clark had a roll call of schools asking alumni of each to stand and be recognized. Central Michigan seems to have had the best representation.

President Ron reminded the club that the Annual Holiday program will be December 16. Rather than having Rotarians perform, the club has invited Ah Tempo! of the Saginaw Choral Society to sing. The Arenac/Standish Club, the Morning Club and the Optimists are also invited. Rotarians are asked to donate a dollar or two at the door to help offset the cost of the entertainment.

Bob Chadwick officiated for the presentation of a Paul Harris Fellow award to Kerry Janca. The award was a gift from her husband and Rotarian Frank. Both past District Governor Eileen Jennings and current District Governor Dee Brock were on hand for the presentation, which was done by Governor Brock.

A highlight of the Rotary year is the presentation of the Rotary Outstanding Service and Excellence (ROSE) award, which is given to a member of the Bay City Club whose service is above and beyond. The 2014 award was presented to Chuck Cusick who, with his wife Nancy, has traveled the world participating in Rotary immunization programs and other events. Chuck is well known in the district for his "Rotary 101" courses about the Rotary Foundation and the opportunities for service.

The Centennial Committee has set the goal of EVERY MEMBER achieving Paul Harris Fellow status during the Centennial Year. There are matching points available that allow a member to receive their first Paul Harris level at a fraction of the normal $1,000 contribution.

Bay County received a grant from the US Department of Justice to implement ways to respond to the issue of abuse among people 50 and older. Julie Chamberlain will provide information that speaks to this growing issue.

Dec 9, 2014: Hiring Veterans. Ric Davila from the Saginaw Veteran's Administration office will be speaking on hiring veterans.

Dec 16, 2014: Annual Holiday Program. Ah Tempo! of the Saginaw Choral Society to perform. Members of other clubs will be invited.
