Rotarians received a report and program by a group of six Western High students and their teachers who recently visited China as part of an exchange. Students from Chinese schools had recently visited Bay City as the other half of the exchange.

Members of the club were impressed by how articulate all of the students were and how excited they were about their experiences.

Asked about the language barrier, the reaction from teachers was that Chinese students are fairly fluent in English, so it was not a huge problem. Teachers, on the other hand, had some trouble communicating. Translators, of course, helped with any problems.

The school day was very long and the Chinese students worked very hard. One comment was that with math problems the American students instinctively wanted to use their graphing calculators. The Chinese kids, on the other hand, did everything by hand.

One student had the "opportunity" to use the Chinese health care system while there. Relating some of that experience did bring laughter to the audience. One teacher commented that in America a Doctor would prescribe an antibiotic with careful instructions on dosage. In China, the Doctor gave them a box of pills and said "take until you feel better".

Part of the funding for this trip was in the form of a grant from Rotary. The students and teachers expressed their thanks for that assistance.

The club expresses it's condolences to long time member Don Massnick on the loss of his wife Jean last week.
