Lunar Eclipse an Early Morning Treat

Saturday morning's lunar eclipse held the promise of red tones and was dubbed a "blood moon." But atmospheric conditions didn't produce the red tones many hoped for. Still our fascination with the moon and the stars made for an engaging display for those early morning risers.

I must admit the idea of getting up before 6 am without a fishing pole somehow factored in seems a bit crazy for me. However a lunar eclipse is a great show. Having awakened a bit early, a quick check of cloud conditions let us know eclipse viewing was on. The skies were totally clear.

By six, we poised ourselves off the front porch as the moon was slowly setting in the west. A factor we had not taken into consideration and would soon limit our viewing. By 6:15, a shadow started to creep across the moon beginning from the left side. While this was not our first eclipse, the early morning show featured a sunrise from behind and the wakening of birds. The lack of traffic allowed the songs of the birds to provide great background music.

By 6:30, a distinctive crescent shape appeared as the shadow slid across the moon. As the shadow continued its left to right track, the descending moon make it increasing difficult to do "city" shooting with the interference of the trees. But the view was still inspiring as we were now staring at the half eclipse moon. The show continued but we had to stop shooting as the moon sunk lower in the sky.

Late September holds the next lunar eclipse. That is said to be a better viewing one with the eclipse starting in the early evening and the moon rising in the east as the setting sun will allow for a darkening sky. Stay tuned for another great sky show.
