A bill in the Michigan Legislature with bipartisan support aims to give tax incentives to employers who "Hire Our Heroes."

There are currently around 660,000 veterans in Michigan, the 11th largest veteran population in the country.

The wars in Iraq and Afghanistan have created the largest influx of veterans in decades.

But after fighting for our freedom around the world, they are sadly facing another battle when they come home: the battle to find work and lead a normal life.

In 2013, Michigan had the second-highest veteran unemployment rate in the U.S. with a rate of 10.6%, and 13.5% specifically for post-9/11 veterans -- both 4% higher than the national veteran unemployment rates.

A Vietnam veteran, Senator Vincent Gregory, D-Southfield, is working to change that with his "Hire MI Heroes Act."

The bipartisan legislation will provide Michigan businesses that hire our veterans with a tax credit of 25% of the veterans' compensation up to $4,000.

Sen. Gregory said: "As a veteran and former police detective, I am committed to keeping our citizens safe, ensuring our local police and fire services are adequately funded and making sure our military men and women have the same support when they return home that they do when they're abroad.

"It helps our small businesses lower their taxes while helping our veterans get back on their feet and put the skills, talents and discipline they honed in the military to work in our economy."

"Our men and women in armed forces put their lives on the line to defend our freedom and we need to stand up for them when they return home," said state Rep. Jeremy Moss. "We can and should do more for our veterans, and this legislation will help them live the American dream that they were fighting to protect."

Gregory graduated from Dundee Public Schools and attended Washtenaw Community College before enlisting in the military. He joined the Marine Corps in 1968 and attained the rank of Corporal. Vince served in Vietnam from Thanksgiving Day, 1969 to Thanksgiving Day, 1970. He received an honorable discharge from the Marine Corp in April of 1971.

In 1973, Gregory joined the Wayne County Sheriff's Department, where he achieved the ranks of Corporal and Detective. After ten years with the Department, Vince was elected as Vice President of the Wayne County Sheriff's Local 502 SEIU, AFL-CIO. He was elected president of the local in 1993, and held that position for the next seven years.

In January 2003, Vince retired from the Wayne County Sheriff's Department after 30 years of distinguished service.
