Tara Welch
Tara Welch , Executive Director of Studio 23/The Arts Center in Downtown Bay City as well as a Rotarian, spoke to Rotary about the programs, activities and events of the organization.

Studio 23 started in 1959 and derived its name from its original location in Wieland Furniture's building on US-23, the famous highway that runs from Jacksonville, Florida to Mackinaw City. Today that highway coincides with I-75, but Studio 23 has moved a number of times as well and is now housed in ground floor of the Jennison Building on the river adjacent to Wenonah Park and the Friendship shell.

A non-profit 501(c)3 organization, Studio 23 brings visual arts and creative educational to the entire area. Eight art exhibits are mounted each year and feature art from professional to a "Teenworks & Kids Kreations" show.

The Exhibits compliment educations offerings in many mediums including after school programs, clay, painting, drawing, photography, Sip-N-Swirl, Cupcakes N Canvas, and Paint N Takes. Upstairs, a full clay studio offers classes and workshop areas to potters at all levels.

The Studio also reaches out to the community with many programs. Most recently they partnered with Leadership Bay County to produce the compass rose street art at the entrance to Wenonah Park.

High School students collaborated to design a huge mural on the East walkway under the Veteran's bridge. The project included funding from Rotary and other groups and the final design included credit to those organizations with such things as the Rotary Wheel on the side of a car in the painting. The East Side piece will be complimented with one on the west side next.

CLUB NEWS and ANNOUNCEMENTS

Rotary Welcomed guests Ross and Annona Pearse, Rotarians from New Zealand who came as the guests of Barb Fisher. They met Frank Janca, who spends part of each year "down under" living close to our visitors.

Chris Girard updated the club on the "Running Dead" fundraiser scheduled for October 8. He asked for sponsors to contact him or the committee for participation. Brenda Scramlin is the volunteer coordinator for the event.

Connie Schweitzer is still taking nominations for Paul Harris awards to be granted to non-Rotarians at the upcoming District Gala. Members should have received an e-mail with a link to the nomination form on the club web site.

The club is scheduled to meet in the Doubletree Restaurant next week.

The next Rotary Night Out is scheduled for September 28, 5:30pm, at the Tri-City Brewery. Bob Chadwick, always in favor of a good "pub crawl" said that after 7:00pm, anyone who wants to is free to crawl to any pub that they want.

Lee Newton reminded members of the World Polio Day live stream event at the Monday evening, October 24, at the State Theatre. Lee also added some weekly "Polio 101" facts. Remember, our club is in a good natured competition with the morning club to see which club can raise the most money per member by October 24. Our club goal is $1,000, which we are well on the way to.
