Dick Somalski, whose motto is "you can't have too many friends" was recognized On Saturday, May 16th for being a great friend and supporter of his community. The award is the icing on the cake of a long list of awards to this very dedicated individual who has given back so much to the community.
The award is inscribed, "in appreciation for his ever present support and dedication to the improvement of our Garden Club and to the Bay City Community".
Specifically called out in this award were Mr. Somalski's work and support of the Bay City Garden Club's community projects- the Kantzler Arboretum and the Outdoor Reading Garden at the Wirt Library. Through his landscape design business he also has been more than generous in assisting the Club with education, facility and products to the benefit of our local community.
His civic efforts are far-reaching and varied. He is involved in his craft as a registered Landscape Architect and member of the Michigan Certified Nurserymen. He helped write an agriculture program for the Bay-Arenac ISD and is still involved in its implementation.
Speed skating is his second love and he helped to grow the local sport while mentoring many youth to National acclaim. Without the drive of Mr. Somalski a multi-purpose ice skating arena may not have become a local reality.
He is or has been a Lion, a Bay County Sports Hall of Famer and a member of the Board of Education. He has been recognized by the Bay Area Chamber of Commerce. He continues to be BIG in his commitment to the Bay Area's quality of life.
