PRE-DIABETES: STOP DIABETES IN ITS TRACKS

Bay Regional Medical Center's Diabetes Education Program will be offering a two-day seminar, Pre-Diabetes: Stop Diabetes in Its Tracks on Tuesday, November 1 and Tuesday, November 8 from 1:00 to 3:00 p.m. both days at the Lincoln Center, 820 S. Lincoln, Bay City. (You must attend both classes.)

Who Should Attend? If you have a family history of diabetes; If you have a history of gestational diabetes or a baby weighing more than nine pounds at birth; If you have high blood pressure BP greater than 140/90; If you have low HDL, or high triglycerides; If you are African American, Native American, Asian American, Hispanic American or a Pacific Islander; If you have been told by a doctor that you have a "touch of diabetes" or have borderline diabetes; or if you are overweight.

Why Should You Attend? You can take steps to prevent type 2 diabetes from developing. Once you develop type 2 diabetes, it won't go away, so it's better to prevent it in the first place. (Pre-diabetes is a fasting glucose level between 100 and 125. A fasting glucose of 126 or higher means diabetes.) As you get older, especially if you are overweight, your chances of having pre-diabetes increase. Anyone over the age of 45 and overweight should be checked for diabetes.

You must attend most classes. There is a $25 per person charge for the entire session, payable at the first class. You must pre-register by calling Bay Regional Medical Center's Diabetes Education Program at (989) 894-9528.

Kroger Donates to the Helen M. Nickless Volunteer Clinic

For the third consecutive year, the Helen M. Nickless Volunteer Clinic, Essexville, MI, expresses its appreciation to Kroger for their donation of 150 influenza vaccine doses to patients of the Clinic. The flu vaccine will help protect the Clinic patients from the seasonal flu.

Volunteers have been vaccinating patients each week at their Wednesday evening clinic and their twice-monthly chronic care clinic. Without the generous donation from Kroger Pharmacy Michigan Division, most of the patients would not receive this vaccine.

Without the generosity of community-minded businesses such as Kroger, we would not be able to provide such quality care.

The Helen M. Nickless Volunteer Clinic (HMNVC) is an access point for meeting the primary health care needs of the economically disadvantaged residents in the Bay area. We serve with deep compassion and respect those who fall through the medical safety net and help them connect with basic health resources by offering education, prevention and treatment. Located at East Side Medical Mall, 1460 W. Center Road (corner of Center/Pine), Essexville, MI, (989) 895-4830. HMNVC operates Wednesday evenings from 4:00 pm until the last patient is seen The Helen M. Nickless Volunteer Clinic is a service of the community, Bay Regional Medical Center, and Bay Medical Foundation - "Neighbors Serving Neighbors."
