John Glenn's swimming team continued their undefeated season (9-0) as they defeated Garber 122-59 at the Bobcat pool Thursday night. On an individual level, John Glenn's Tanner Peltier led all swimmers with two individual wins and 2 team relay wins. There were also 5 individual state qualifying times marked and one team state qualifying time in this event. That means those individuals will be eligible to compete in the state meet scheduled for March 9th at Oakland University.

More than individual victories and qualifications, this swim meet was an opportunity to experience a different sporting event. Like most of us, we experience a swimming event once every four years through the Olympics. But as I soon found out, this is much more exciting and fun to watch in person than just on TV.

Due to the tight confines of the high school pools, you are right on top of the athletes. That means you can cheer louder and with the echoing, it does get rather noisy in there. But it was a good noise as family, friends and teammates vigorously encouraged their favorite swimmers to press on to beat either the closest opponent or their personal best time. Much of the event seemed to be competing against yourself as much as an opponent or teammate. Add to this the teammates, at the end of each lane, hollering encouragement, it made for a very exciting time.

Another great feature about the sport is the level of respect the athletes have for themselves, their teammates and their opponents. In a couple of the longer events, while most of the competitors may have finished the race, one or two younger swimmers may still be competing. These swimmers would still be swimming as hard as if they were in the lead and both teams would turn and continue to encourage as if it was for a win.

And the diving.. Having tried it ONCE when I was their age, I have an appreciation for the courage it takes to leap from a board, attempt a flip and barely pass the board as you slip into the water. It was impressive the amount of spins, flips and turns they were able to execute in the air. While not all the dives landed hands first with a nice vertical slip into the water, okay there was some nice feet first landings, they did it with such poise and grace to earn the respect of all who observed.

The toughest thing for this casual observer was to know who was who. There were no numbers to see and even if there was, they would be submerged. Except for a swim cap that held the schools name on it, even that was hard to see. In all it "just didn't matter" as you quickly found yourself cheering for the lad who was just behind while equally cheering for the swimmer who was just ahead. All in all, it was a great experience and one that I will enjoy again soon.

For those who like the outcome, here are the winners and times:

  • 200 Medley Relay Glenn: W. Richard, B. Luczak, T. Peltier, L. Carson 1:55.66
  • 200 Free Style Garber: Josh Pityer 1:54.58 Both Pityer and 2nd place Tyler Marciniak had State qualifying times.
