Tracy Rainey
Tracy Rainey, the Sexual Assault Program Director ad the Bay Area Women's Center spoke to Rotary about Sexual Assault Awareness Month in April and Denim Day.

Tracy has been with the Women's Center for about 16 years. She's watched the evolution of the organization over that time. Many strides have been made the numbers are still high and the cases are still real. The designation of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month gives centers the opportunity to talk about the issues.

To illustrate the work of the Center and the people served, Tracy gave several recent examples. These included the case of a 25 year old, working, single mother. She noticed when bathing her children that they had bruises. She took them to the ER, which referred her to the Women's Center.

Cases are referred to the Center because they specialize in this type of case and have trained nurses on staff. The Center coordinates with the hospitals and law enforcement and brought in the appropriate people. The Center also knows how to work with cases like this and properly treat victims and shepherd them through the system.

Denim Days is named for an Italian case in 1997 where an 18 year old student was assaulted by her driving instructor, raped and abandoned in an alley. The perpetrator was caught and convicted of rape and sentenced to jail. Upon appeal the conviction was overturned because the girl has been wearing jeans and the judge felt she would have had to help the attacker remove those jeans, making the rape consensual.

With international headlines, the woman's jeans became a symbol and today women wear jeans in April as an international symbol of protest about harmful attitudes about rape.

Tracy talked about the realities of abuse in the area and the work of the Women's Center and similar services, which has grown and improved over the years. If the job is done well, victim's mental health will be better, the community will see a lower financial effect to the health and legal systems.
