Spring has arrived and trees will soon begin to open their leaves. Many of the street and park trees throughout Bay County are Ash Trees. Yes, we still have healthy, living ash trees in Bay County. The Bay County Gypsy Moth Suppression Program has included these trees in the annual Emerald Ash Borer (EAB) Treatment Project. Most of the trees, over 2,400 are treated in odd numbered years while approximately 700 are treated in even numbered years.

During the fall of 2016, staff from the Bay County Gypsy Moth Suppression Program evaluated the publicly owned ash trees throughout Bay County and found that most are still healthy enough to benefit from treatment to control EAB. Trees that are scheduled to be treated in 2017 will be marked with a yellow dot on the side facing the road. All of these trees were treated in 2013. Trees Marked with a green dot were treated in the spring of 2016.

The EAB treatments help to maintain the health of the ash trees and should protect them from further EAB damage for at least two years. All of the trees will continue to be monitored throughout the summer and fall to evaluate the effectiveness of the treatments and the continued health of these trees.

If you have any questions regarding the tree marking taking place or the EAB treatment program, please contact Alicia Wallace, Coordinator of the Bay County Gypsy Moth Suppression Program at 989-895-4195 or via email at wallacea@baycounty.net.
