Frankenmuth's Snowfest was a true "Block Party" in many ways. People gathering outside, wonderful food and entertainment, all the ingredients for a great time. But it was the Blocks of Snow that were the centerpiece of the party.

Teams from around the World, the State and the community brought their talents, tools and imaginations to Frankenmuth and put on a great show of art and skill for all to see. There were collegiate competitions as well as high school and children snow sculpting events.

Local artist Tom Gillman and his son worked side by side taking 4th place out of 19 amazing sculptures.

Where there is snow, there is also ice, as in Ice Sculpting as amazingly talented creations were put on display. Greg Butauski, Award Winning Certified Master Ice Sculptor and his team created the TV-5 News Desk and a 100-block masterpiece depicting the Zehnder's kitchen. This was an exhibit you had to seen to believe. This beautifully sculpted kitchen featured both a pie and a chicken cooking in the oven, a fired stone oven with flames, a chef rolling out the dough and much more. Two "live" chickens were being pursued making a new meaning to "frozen food".

Amazing ice sculptures. If you look closely you can see a pie and a chicken in the ovens.

But sculpting was not the only centerpiece of this event. Food also took center stage so to speak. From an Apple Recipe Contest, to a Dueling Piano lunch to the Grand Finale, The 23rd Annual Chef's Hot Food Competition and Tasting at Zehnder's Restaurant, each day presented a unique opportunity to sample great fare.

This is truly an interactive event that allows anyone to come at anytime, day or night, and enjoy the festival as many of the teams work well into the night carving on their blocks of snow or ice. The artists are always willing to chat with the spectators and you can watch the ice and snow come to life at their hands.

"To the Trees". Pete Nelson of Treehouse Masters would be impressed with this tree house.

While we enjoy the activities during the day, for photography and even just viewing purposes, we love going at night. The lower crowds and ability to photograph the designs while controlling the light is a real treat. There is so much fun to see and do. Plan now for next year's festival being held from January 27 through February 1.

Here are more photos of this year's event.

Look closely at this whale. There is a sea turtle to the far right, a scuba diver on his back and a squid (I think) on the front of him.
