Opening weekend is a tough time to be facing conference rivals and title contenders. That is exactly what Garber and Millington faced as they squared off to start the 2014 season. As both teams worked through early miscues, they both showed a strong air attack.

While Garber was more dominant in the air, the game ultimately turned on Millington's one two punch in their ground game that turned the tide. Two fourth quarter scores gave Millington a come from behind victory over Garber.

Garber took the opening kickoff and using a spread offense, took to the air. Striking fast and early, the Dukes moved within the ten yard line. Then a Millington hit during the hand-off exchanged caused a fumble and stopping Garber's opening drive.

Millington drove to midfield before a sack by Jared Greshow ended the drive.

After a scoreless first quarter, Garber struck first on their opening possession of the second quarter. Having stopped a Millington fake punt, Garber hit pay dirt on the very next play. Quarterback Logan Martin hit Brendyn Claerhout on a 60 yard strike to put Garber ahead, 7-0.

Now it was Millington's turn for the big play. On third and 9 yards to go, Cardinal running back Chase Maxon ran to the left, broke a couple tackles then cut across the field to out race the Garber defense for an 79 yard touchdown run. Following a Duke penalty on the extra point, Millington's Caleb Washer darted in for a two point conversion and a 8-7 lead.

Late in the quarter, it was Garber's turn for the big play. After receiving the punt, Logan Martin hit sophomore wide out Jake Sansburn in front of the Duke bench. Sansburn snared the pass and raced downfield for another long score. Garber's two point conversion failed making it a 13-8 Duke lead at the half.

Millington took the opening second half possession and marched down field with a ball control offense. Utilizing both backs, they drove to the one yard line before Maxon leaped in giving the Cardinals a 14-13 lead.

Garber would now answer the bell. Having led the offense with his arm, Martin took over the Duke offense with his legs as well. Optioning right, Martin slipped a couple tackles and raced down the sidelines to the Millington 22. Two plays later, Martin threw a nice touch pass over the defender to Brendyn Claerhout in the back of the end zone. Claerhout, made a diving catch for Garber's go ahead score. A failed two point conversion left the lead at 19-14 near the end of the third quarter.

Millington would go back to their ground attack and take the lead on the legs of Chase Maxon. Using an earlier play, Maxon drove off left tackle then cut back right for a 47 yard touchdown run. A successful two point conversion pass gave the Cardinals a 22-19 lead with 8:09 remaining.

Garber looked to respond by driving deep into Millington territory, but a good hit on a fourth down pass jarred the ball loose ending the Duke drive. Millington soon put the game out of reach. After another long run, running back Koltyn Sebert burst up the middle for a 19 yard score sealing a Millington 28-19 win.

On the night, Garber's Logan Martin threw for 249 yards and three touchdowns. Brendyn Claerhout was his favorite target hauling in 10 balls for 149 yards and two touchdowns. Martin also lead the Duke ground attack rushing for 100 yards on 12 carries.
