Clarence Sevillian has been appointed president and CEO of McLaren Bay Region, a subsidiary of McLaren Health Care.

He will succeed Alice Gerard, RN, 60, who is retiring as president and CEO on Dec. 20.

Sevillian, 44, a Flint native, went from Beecher High on scholarship to Vanderbilt University, a private research and medical center in Nashville, Tennessee.

As a senior wide receiver on the Vanderbilt football team in 1992, he led the SEC and was seventh in the nation in yards per catch at 21.2. He set a Vandy record with 222 receiving yards against Tennessee in 1992.

Sevillian played for the Commodores 1989-1992, gaining a four-year total of 2,018 yards and averaging 19.2 yards per reception and 12 TDs.

He later signed with the NFL Cincinnati Bengals, spending one year on the practice squad.

He worked his way up through the ranks starting as a staff physical therapist at McLaren Health Care in Flint.

McLaren CEO Philip Incarnati has described Sevillian as a "rising star."

"We are excited to welcome Clarence to the McLaren Bay Region family," said William Bowen, chairman for the McLaren Bay Region board of directors. "His track record as a health care administrator is impressive, while his background as a health care provider likewise commands respect. He'll be an asset not only to our medical center but also to the entire Great Lakes Bay Region community."

Sevillian will be responsible for the overall administrative operations of McLaren Bay Region, including implementing and overseeing critical strategic initiatives.

"Clarence has held numerous positions across various McLaren subsidiaries, and he has proven himself with each promotion," said Mark O'Halla, executive vice president/chief operating officer of McLaren Health Care. "I'm confident, whether working with physicians, staff, patients or communities, that he'll be just as successful in his new role as president and CEO of McLaren Bay Region."

Sevillian comes to McLaren Bay Region from the president and CEO post at McLaren Oakland, a McLaren Health Care subsidiary with 335 licensed beds located in Pontiac.

He also served as vice president of operations at McLaren Lapeer Region and held the following positions at McLaren Flint: director of business development and strategic planning; director of physical therapy/sports medicine, wellness, diabetes education and weight management; manager of wellness and sports medicine; manager of wellness; and physical therapist.

A native of Flint, Sevillian holds an MBA from Lawrence Technological University and a master's degree in physical therapy from the University of Michigan-Flint. He holds two bachelor's degrees: one in mathematics from Vanderbilt University and another in health science from the University of Michigan-Flint. He and his wife, Arteka, have two teenage daughters.

Upon retirement at the end of the year, Gerard concludes a more than 35-year career at McLaren Bay Region, where she began as staff registered nurse in 1978 and rose through the ranks, assuming the following positions and start dates: nursing supervisor (1986), director of nursing (1990), vice president of patient care services (1999), and ultimately, president and CEO (2006).

"Throughout my years at McLaren Bay Region, one thing has remained constant: our dedication to providing patient-centered care," said Gerard. "I know this commitment will endure long after I depart, and I leave with the knowledge that the organization is in good hands."

Gerard received her Associates Degree in Nursing (ADN) from Delta College, University Center, Michigan. She subsequently earned Bachelors of Science in Nursing (BSN); and Masters of Science in Nursing (MSN) degrees from Saginaw Valley State University, University Center, Michigan.

She is a member of several boards, including the Michigan State University Statewide Campus System Governing Board, Saginaw Valley State University Board of Fellows, the Delta College Foundation Board, and the Chemical Bank Community Advisory Board.
