Western High Students Report On Exchange Trip To China
Students perform song they learned in China
Eight Wester High students and three adult advisers recently returned from an exchange trip to the Chongquing area of Southwestern China. This sprawling municipality, located where the Yangtze and Jialing rivers meet, boasts a population of around 9.7 million people.
Teacher Jill Wrzesinski, Justin Shaner, and Jacob Woisine opened the program with a few words about the trip, which was put together by SVSU through the Gerstacker Foundation and received Community Grant funding from this Rotary Club. The objective was to experience the Chinese education system and culture.
Each of the students spoke about the impact the trip had on their lives. They also narrated a number of slides which covered the area, city, schools, zoo and, of course, the food.
Eric's family had hosted a Chinese student before this trip. He talked about taking the visitor to Applebee's where Eric ordered steak, a new experience for the Chinese and one he had no idea how to eat. On the trip, Eric says he was rather adventurous with food. "If there was something you were not sure about, I'd probably eat it for you and tell you if it was good or not."
The Chinese tried to make American food for their visitors. "They tried french fries. They were cold but pretty good." Several of the students described other foods.
The school was an interesting experience. The Chinese attend from early morning into the evening. Another comment was how much freedom we have in the US. If you don't like where you're at, go somewhere else. That's not possible in China. Students in China take exams that determine where they will end up. They don't have the choice.
The American Students were all enthusiastic about their experience. They learned and experienced in a way that will make the trip a memory they'll always cherish for years to come.
