Whether it's a traffic situation, bridge closures, or a tornado warning, Bay County is taking steps to inform area citizens and make sure they're safe.
That was the message from
Chris Izworski, Emergency Management Coordinator for Bay County.
The Emergency Management department works Homeland Security to "mitigate, prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from" any of the many emergencies and disasters that can occur in the area.
In Bay County the new
Bay Alerts
system is an emergency mass notification system. It can notify citizens by phone, text and/or e-mail if there's an emergency. They coordinate with local 9-1-1 to get the word out.
The Emergency Management department recently bought the notification system and has put it in place. They can pinpoint any area within the county and broadcast messages and warnings.
Working with 9-1-1 has allowed the system to incorporate all land line phones into the system. Cell phones, text and e-mail notifications require that citizens log into the
Bay Alerts
system and sign up. The process is very simple and quick. It can be done from any Internet connected device from computer to tablet to smart phone.
Chis also outlined other emergency warning services provided by the county. This includes the sirens located around the county and the river front audio warning system. Much of this system was funded by Homeland Security grants.
