Farewell

It was rather emotional to be on the riverfront at mid-morning on Monday. The vendors and displays were gone, the cleanup crews were loading up the porta-johns, and most of the tall ships were gone. The throngs of people were replaced by a small groups watching as the ships slowly prepared to leave.

There were a few tears as the Europa turned and headed toward the Bay. A little girl waved as her grandfather took photos. As Europa approached the bridge The Highlander Sea turned to follow. Bounty backed out, turned and sat mid-river for some time before following. Pride of Baltimore left soon after.

At each good vantage point down river there were small crowds gathered to wave goodbye to the ships. At the park in Essexville car horns saluted each ship as it passed.

As an historic port and ship building center, Bay City's waterfront has a proud heritage of ships and sails. The visit of the Tall Ships lets us visualize some of what it must have been like a hundred years ago.

To all the Ships and crews, Bay City thanks you for visiting and bids you farewell as you depart. We hope to see you again in two years.
