PRESS RELEASE: State Representative Jeff Mayes (D-Bay City) today was named Chair of the House Committee on Energy and Technology for the 95th Legislature. Mayes also was named to the Banking and Financial Services Committee; Tax Policy Committee; and the Agriculture Committee. Rep. Mayes previously served as Vice Chair of the Energy and Technology Committee in the 94th Legislature.

"It is an honor to serve as the Chair of this important committee and I look forward to working with my colleagues on both sides of the aisle to help make Michigan a technological giant and a world leader in renewable energy production," said Mayes, who represents the 96th House District. "In order for Michigan to be truly competitive in the new energy economy, I believe we need a diverse energy policy that welcomes innovation and creates jobs. This appointment is an opportunity to work on behalf of Bay County residents to make the positive change Michigan needs."

Mayes, a long-time proponent of renewable energy, was the lead negotiator in a comprehensive energy package that established a renewable portfolio standard that required 10 percent of our electricity come from clean, renewable sources; measures to increase energy efficiency across the state; tax credits for renewable energy companies like Hemlock Semiconductor, which created thousands of green-collar, innovative jobs; and the creation of a new generation of power plants like the new facility at the Karn Weadock complex in Essexville, which will provide thousands of good-paying jobs. Mayes also played a significant role in promoting renewable fuels as the former Chair of the House Agriculture Committee. Last month, Mayes was honored with a Governmental Leadership Award from the Great Lakes Renewable Energy Association for his work on renewable energy.

Mayes has also been a leader on technology issues, working with telecommunications companies and counties to pass a plan that limits the amount by which a county can increase its surcharge for 9-1-1 services.

"Jeff has been a tireless advocate for renewable energy in Michigan and I'm confident that with his help, we can build a stronger energy future for Michigan," said House Speaker Andy Dillon (D-Redford Twp.) "He understands that in order to create good-paying jobs now, we must take advantage of the enormous opportunity that renewable energy provides us. He will be a strong and effective leader for the people of Michigan, and I look forward to working with him on the key energy issues affecting our state."

AS LIFE LONG TREE HUGGER I HAVE TO HOPE THAT THIS APPOINTMENT WILL MEAN A NEW DIRECTION FOR ENERGY DEVELOPEMENT IN MICHIGAN.. THE THREAT OF BEING A DOWNWIND, SENIOR CITIZEN, BREATHING EMISSIONS FROM A COAL PLANT, IS HORRIFYING TO ME AND MY FAMILY .. I HAVE PURCHASED GREEN CREDITS (PAYING PREMIUM ON ENERGY BILL) TO HELP ALONG OUR MAJOR UTILITY SWITCH TO RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES.. I KNOW THIS IS SLOW WORK I ALSO REALIZE THAT 10% IS CONCILLIATORY IN NATURE GERMANY WILL SOON BE 45% FRANCE IS NEARLY 100% NUCLEAR ETC. WE ARE STILL DRAGGING OUR FEET . SEEMS WE ARE FAR FROM BEING WORLD LEADERS ANYMORE... SINCERELY
